Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa was recently declared one of the provisional “7 new Wonders of Nature” in a campaign that lasted 4 years and was decided by public vote – more than 100 million votes were counted.

Other winners included The Amazon, Halong Bay in Vietnam and the Komodo Island in Indonesia. While re-counting and verification still needs to take place, we are sure Table Mountain will remain as one of the Worlds 7 New Wonders of Nature.

For Capetonians, Table Mountain is a source of immense pride and enjoyment – from Cable Car trips to rock-climbing, amazing fauna and flora to incredible hikes, Table Mountain has it all.

Here are 10 Fun Facts About This Natural Wonder of the World.

Table Mountain is the only terrestrial feature in the world which has a constellation named after it. French astronomer Nicolas de Lacaille named the constellation Mensa (meaning table) during his stay in Cape Town in the eighteenth century. It can be seen in the Southern Hemisphere, below Orion, around midnight in July.

The floral world is divided into six distinct floral kingdoms, five of them encompassing several countries, and in some cases, several continents. The only exception is South Africa, which has a floral kingdom wholly contained within the country. The Cape Floral Kingdom has 9,600 plant species, 70% of which are not found anywhere else in the world. Table Mountain alone has over 1 500 species of plants, which is more than the entire United Kingdom!

According to the ancient Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui, Cape Town is the ultimate Feng Shui city, largely because it has Table Mountain to the rear and the ocean to the front. The city has the shape of an armchair, with protection from Table Mountain to the back and Lion’s Head and Devil’s Peak as the armrests. The city itself sits in an energy-filled “bowl” surrounded on three sides by mountain, while the wealth-creating properties of water are to the front – making for the perfect city!

Table Mountain is approximately 260 million years old. Compare this to the Andes – about 250-million years old, the Rockies – about 60-million years old, the Himalayas 40-million and the Alps around 32-million years old.

Most of the world’s caves and cave systems occur in limestone. Table Mountain is the unusual exception, with several large cave systems that have developed in sandstone.

The original table Mountain Cableway was completed in just two years and cost £60 000. It was officially opened on the 4th of October 1929 by the Mayor of Cape Town, Reverend AJS Lewis.

The latest cable cars (in operation since the 1997 upgrade) were imported from Switzerland. The floor of the cable car rotates, giving riders a 360 degree view on the way up and down. There are only 2 other cable cars like it in the world, one in Titlis in the Swiss Alps in Switzerland, and the other in Palm Springs in America.

The cables that make up the Cableway weigh 18 tonnes.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has a proud track record of being totally accident-free.

Many famous people have taken the ride on the cable car to the top of table Mountain. These include Oprah Winfrey, Sting, Steffi Graf, Michael Schumacher, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Margaret Thatcher, Prince Andrew, Brooke Shields, Michael Buble, Jackie Chan, Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries, Tina Turner, Skin from Skunk Anansie and legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold.

If you’d like to call Cape Town home and have Table Mountain as part of your daily life, why not visit www.1stcontactvisas.com and find out more about immigrating to sunny South Africa?

With around 300 days to go before the 2012 Olympic Games, we thought we’d find out a bit more about the impressive Olympic Park and stadium.

The Olympic Park project was a deemed a huge success in construction terms, taking less than three years to build (way ahead of schedule) and coming in £10 million under budget.

The Stadium seats 80 000 spectators for sports events.

It is the lightest Olympic stadium ever built.

The Velodrome is geared to be the fastest indoor cycling track in the world.

The wave shaped roof on the Aquatics Centre measures 12 000 square metres – one and a half times bigger than the Wembley football pitch.

Olympic park cost £486 million to construct.

An estimated 5 200 people were directly involved in the building operations and 320 UK businesses were involved in the project.

The International Broadcast Centre at Olympic Park will be a non-stop media hub for approximately 20 000 broadcasters, journalists and photographers.

The Games will be broadcast an estimated 4 billion people worldwide.

This will be the first Olympic Games with HD freeze-frame.

It took 1000 working days to build the stadium.

The stadium has 14 lighting towers and 532 individual flood lights

The ArcelorMittal Orbit by Anish Kapoor is the centrepiece of London’s Olympic Park, towering 115 metres from the ground, with spectacular views of London’s skyline from special platforms.

5 new bridges were built to increase access to Olympic Park.

Before building started, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), assisted by the Museum of London, carried out detailed investigations into the heritage of the site and found more heritage than they bargained for! Several artefacts were unearthed, including a Roman coin dating back to 330-335 AD, several pieces of ancient pottery dating back to the 4th century AD, ancient remains dating right back to the Bronze Age, a 2000 year old hut and an entire cobbled street from around 1850.

We all know that Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam Tournament still played on grass and most of us are aware that at 17, Boris Becker was the youngest player (and first unseeded player and first German) to win the men’s singles title… but here a few facts that might be entirely new to even the most ardent tennis fans.

In contrast to the young Boris Becker, the oldest ever Men’s Single Champion was Arthur Gore of Great Britain who won the title at the ripe (oldish) age of 41.

Speaking of age, Jean Borota of France has had the longest Wimbledon career… He won his first Wimbledon title in 1924; was still competing in the main tournament in 1964; and at the very ripe old age of 78, played in the Wimbledon veterans’ doubles in 1977.

The last time a married woman won the women’s singles championship was in 1981. The Mrs was Chris Evert Lloyd.

The last time anyone played at Wimbledon with a wooden racket was in 1987.

In 1931 Spanish player Lili de Alvarez caused quite a stir at Wimbledon by playing in “a divided skirt”, the forerunner to shorts. The sensational outfit was designed by Elsa Schiaparelli – a controversial Italian designer of the time.

The first ever black player to win a Wimbledon singles championship was American Althea Gibson who took the title in 1957.

Did you know that Wimbledon’s Centre Court was a victim of World War II? 5 bombs hit Centre Court during an air attack in October 1940, totally destroying 1200 seats. It took 9 years for the court to be fully restored.

Up until 1968 only “amateur” players were allowed to take part in the tournament. At that stage sports people who were paid to play were considered second-class citizens… In 1968, Wimbledon first allowed “professionals” and so began what was known as the “open era.”

The prize money has certainly increased since then. In 1968, the year of the first “open” championships, the male winner received £2 000 and the female winner £750. In 2011, the prize money for the men’s and women’s singles winners is £1.1 million.

The prize money for male and female Wimbledon winners was only “equalized” in 2007, 34 years after Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in 3 sets, to prove that women’s tennis wasn’t “inferior” as Riggs had publicly claimed.

A challenge round system (where the defending champion automatically qualified for the next year’s final) was used from 1877 – 1921.

Ball girls were first employed at Wimbledon in 1977 and in 1985, they were allowed on Centre Court for the first time.

The top-selling item in the Wimbledon gift shop in 2010 was yellow mini tennis ball keyrings – she store sold 18 000 of them!

Yellow balls were introduced in 1986 to replace the white balls, which were hard for umpires to see.

This year, Slazenger supplied 52 200 tennis balls to Wimbledon!

As we prepare to see if Murray can play his way into Sunday’s final, a last extra piece of trivia – it has in fact been 75 years since a Brit won the Men’s Singles Tournament. But you probably knew that one already…

Next Saturday the 11th of June, more than 1000 people are expected to participate in the London Naked Bike Ride. Should this number be achieved, it will officially go down in history as the largest naked protest in London.

The worldwide event is staged for many reasons – it’s a demonstration against oil dependency, a call to protect the environment, a celebration of the human body, a call for safer cycling lanes and facilities and a campaign to encourage more people to use bikes to get around in cities.

Similar events will take place in Brighton, Manchester, York and Southampton; and further away in Edinburgh and in US cities San Francisco and Chicago.

Although the idea is to be completely naked, you are not obliged to strip off to participate. Bare as much as you dare, try bodypainting or fancy dress if nudity is not your thing!

Come and show your support for the environment, cyclists and nudity by bringing your bike, skates or skateboard to Hyde Park on Saturday the 11th of June and prepare to set off at 3pm.

For more information, visit http://wiki.worldnakedbikeride.org/wiki/London.

Having earned the reputation in recent years as possessing one of the UK’s most unique and cutting-edge festival line-ups, Standon Calling’s 2011 bill is shaping up to reaffirm this accolade.

Just added to the monstrous list of must-see artists are Hercules and Love Affair, Howard Marks, John Grant, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Dan le Sac, Broken Records, Egyptian Hip Hop and more than 30 other new names.

Experimental disco outfit, Hercules and Love Affair, are set to top the bill on the Twisted Licks Stage on Saturday night, joining Main Stage headliners Spiritualized and Battles in complementing this year’s Gods & Monsters theme. Elsewhere, Howard Marks is headlining the Under Covers Literary Lounge which includes, along with readings and comedy, a Literary Death Match contest and the inaugural ‘Standon Calling’s Bad Sex Awards’.

Joining the musical mix are John Grant and his musical tales of redemption; Chicago’s nine-piece Hypnotic Brass Ensemble showcasing their high-energy, brass-fuelled, hip-hop funk fusion; Dan Le Sac on DJ duties and Scottish six-piece indie-folksters Broken Records. The likes of Cut A Shine, The Travelling Band and The Moulettes, meanwhile, will provide the Magpie’s Nest Stage with a decidedly uptempo folky flavour.

Standon Calling festival is known for much more than its inspiring musical line-up and promises more themed entertainment than ever before. Heavenly (or heathenly) offerings include a Garden of Healing chill-out area with massages and more; a Monster Safari where the cabin crew will serve up improvised comedy and free shots of tequila; and a Hellhound Show (think dog show, but hosted by Lucifer).

There’s a Where the Wild Things Are play area for kids and a Zombie Marketplace full of shops and stalls. Pagan Pilates is on offer to stretch out over-danced limbs, while the Goddess Grooming Parlour can restore festival-frazzled guests to their full glory. Finally, alongside an excellent range of eateries, East London’s Rebel Dining Society is offering festival-goers the chance to dine like deities with a Feast of the Gods where people can enjoy a gourmet banquet of biblical proportions!

“I’m really excited about all the new entertainment we have lined up this year,” says Festival Director Graham Macvoy.

“We’ve never had so many new areas before and moving around the site is going to be a real adventure. One moment you can have a massage, the next you can enter a space hopper race. Besides the three main stages and on-site nightclub we’ve also got a rolling stage travelling around the site offering entertainment.”

This year’s festival is taking place over the weekend of August 12-14 in Standon, Hertfordshire, just 40 minutes away from London. The UK’s only festival with a swimming pool, Standon Calling is a three-day party with musical icons, breakthrough acts, themed fancy dress, an on-site nightclub and all-night bars.
For more details on Standon’s eclectic array of fun and frolics please visit the website.

London is indeed a one-of-a-kind city; a city that gets under your skin. Maybe this is why it has long been a favoured subject of novelists, lyricists and filmmakers.

We decided to weed out our favourite London-based novels and select a Top 20 list of recommendations. Whether you’re travelling to London soon and hoping to gain a sense of the city; curious about life in London through the ages; or a Londoner who just can’t get enough, there’s bound to be something in here for you – from quick, light reads to intense, epic novels you can literally lose yourself in.

Below is our Top 20 List of novels set in London, in no particular order.

The End of the Affair –Graham Greene

Set in London in the time of World War II, this brilliant novel examines the conflicts between self-love, love for another and love for God. A real classic!

City of the Mind – Penelope Lively

This story focuses on Londoner Matthew Halland and his life as a recently divorced father and architect working on the renovation of an old industrial building. The author uses Matthew’s architectural perspective to not only evoke London’s past eras, civilizations and landscapes, but also reflect on the building up and decaying of human relationships.

The Repentant Morning – Chris Paling

A remarkable novel set both in Civil War Spain and in the pubs of Soho, which tells the tale of Meredith Kerr and the four hapless men in her life.

Bitter Sweets – Roopa Farooki

This charming and witty narrative follows three generations of a family caught up in a monstrous web of lies and deceit, starting with 13-year-old Henna’s wedding night, when her husband discovers she is not the accomplished and intelligent 17-year-old her parents said she was.

Absolute Beginners – Malcolm MacInnes

Written from the perspective of a teenage freelance photographer, this delightful book is set in a rundown part of West London in the summer of 1958 – the time of the Nottinghill race riots.

The Time of the Crack – Emma Tennant

A social satire about the chaos that ensues when an overnight split in the earth’s crust causes a huge rift beneath the Thames splitting London in two.

The Ballad of Peckham Rye — Muriel Spark

This humorous novel tells the story of the devilish Dougal Douglas, who moves from Scotland to London, where he wreaks havoc amongst the lives of the Peckham working class.

London Fields by Martin Amis.

A black comedy murder mystery narrated by Samson Young, an American writer living in London who has suffered from writer’s block for 20 years and now has a terminal illness.

Past Imperfect – Julian Fellowes

From the pen of Julian Fellowes, who won the Oscar for his Screenplay ‘Gosforth Park’. An enjoyable and well-paced novel which sees the narrator searching for an heir to his dying friend Damian’s vast fortune.

Our Mutual Friend – Charles Dickens

Undoubtedly one of Dickens’ most sophisticated works, Our Mutual Friend is a vivid tale about money, fate and human values.

White Teeth – Zadie Smith

A funny, affirming and uplifting debut novel about friendship, love, war and family.

A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers – Xiaolu Guo

Despite the title this is in fact a beautiful novel, and tells the story of a young Chinese woman sent by her parents to London to learn English. In an unfamiliar world, where nobody can pronounce her name, she meets an Englishman who has no name…

Brick Lane – Monica Ali

A captivating tale of desire and the contradictions of life, as told through the eyes of Nazneen, a Bengalese immigrant who finds herself married to a man 20 years her senior and living in East London.

A Vicious Circle by Amanda Craig

This vivid and passionate novel is set in 90’s London amidst the cut-throat world of literary criticism. Wildly funny, poignant and well-paced!

The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad.

Set in London in 1886, this much celebrated novel tells the story of Mr Verloc; his life, his job as a secret agent and his relationships with his wife and her family. It was ranked the 46th best novel of the 20th century by Modern Library.

The Tiger in the Smoke – Margery Allingham

A chilling and highly enjoyable crime novel set in 1930’s London.

Only in London – Hanan-Al-Shayk

This well-written, entertaining book tells the story of a chance meeting of four strangers on a plane, and how their lives intertwine from the moment they touch down in London.

An Equal Music – Vikram Seth

A romance of epic proportions set mainly in London, (with beautiful bits in Venice) told through the eyes of Michael, a violinist with a passion for music, love and life.

Night Watch – Sarah Waters

This moving and highly acclaimed novel from Sarah Waters tells the stories of four women dealing with disappointment and loss in 1940’s London.

Cheet – Anna Davis

And last but by no means least, Cheet is a fun but surprisingly meaty novel about Kathryn Cheet, a London taxi driver with 5 lives, 5 lovers and 5 colour-coded cellphones to keep track of it all. Her life takes an unexpected turn the day Twinkle arrives…

We all know that exercise is essential for a healthy body and mind, and a long life. But what if you simply loathe the gym and could think of nothing worse than putting on a pair of shorts and speedwalking through a Park?

We did a little investigating and came up with these 5 alternative ways to keep fit – some new, some not so new – all of them invigorating and fun!

1. Slacklining

Slacklining is a fairly new “sport” which is quickly gaining popularity in Australia, the USA and certain European countries. A slackline is basically webbing, which is strung up between two trees or poles. The idea is first to learn to balance on the line, then to walk on it and finally to do awesome tricks, just as you would on a trampoline! It is a fantastic core workout, helps to improve balance, focus and determination and has been shown to have great results among those with ADHD. Did we forget to mention it is also loads of fun and highly addictive!

2. Bikram

Bikram is a specific type of yoga developed by Bikram Choudry in 1974. If you’re thinking yoga is for girls who eat a lot of lentils, you couldn’t be more wrong! Bikram yoga is a 90-minute workout that will have even the fittest, strongest rugby player sweating, shaking and praying for relief! Essentially a series of 26 postures, Bikram yoga is practiced in a room heated to around 40° C to help detoxify the body and facilitate a deeper stretch. Many heated yoga studios also offer flow or vinyasa yoga, which is a more dynamic and (some say) more intense workout. If it’s mental and physical wellbeing you’re after, along with a super-fit, toned body, bikram yoga is your best bet!

3. Bossaball

Described as a mixture between football, trampoline, volleyball and gymnastics, this high-energy game is played on an inflatable court with an integrated trampoline on either side of a volleyball net. Teams consist of 3-5 players, with only one player per team on the trampoline at any given time and the other players on the inflatables. As with volleyball the objective is to spike the ball so that it hits the floor (in this case the trampoline or inflatables) on the other team’s side. A maximum of 8 contacts is allowed before the ball has to pass over the net; and players are allowed to pass the ball using any part of their body. Bossaball was developed by Belgian Filip Eyckmans in 2005 and is slowly growing in popularity. Bossaball could make it to the UK soon, but for now you might have to travel to Spain, Holland or Portugal to get a game in.

4. Capoeira

Capoeira is a Brazilian art form which combines martial arts, acrobatics and dance. Its origins can be traced back to the 16th Century, but it only started to surface as a part of modern culture in the 1970’s. A circle is made, called a roda. Music is played, with instruments like the berimbau, a drum called an atabaque and a pandeiro, which is a type of tambourine. Inside the Roda, two players interact. There is no punching and no jerky movements. The idea is to use intuition and foresight to anticipate your opponent’s next move and create a sort of graceful, acrobatic dance to expose one another’s weaknesses through playful “attacks” and counterattacks. It requires strength, rhythm and presence of mind and is a fun, challenging way to keep fit.

5. Nia

Nia is a type of body-mind-spirit exercise created in California 1983 by Debbie and Carlos Rosas. The Nia Technique is based on 52 principles that integrate modalities from dance, including jazz and modern dance; martial arts like Tai Chi and Aikido; and healing practices such as yoga. Done barefoot to inspiring music, Nia is a holistic fitness programme, which is cardiovascular and great for weight loss, toning and flexibility. Most importantly though, Nia teaches you to be more joyful and expressive your everyday life.

As summer approaches, why not ditch the gym card and try something new and exciting, with more benefits than purely the physical?
