Following the protests on 8 and 9 March where more than 270 000 PCS members went on strike, the union is now planning a second strike on the 24th of March to coincide with Budget Day.
This action follows the Government’s decision to make changes to redundancy payouts in the public sector. From April, civil servants earning £30,000 or less will be entitled to a maximum of three years’ pay or £60,000, whichever is the lesser. Those earning £30,000 or more will be paid a maximum of two years’ pay. Redundancy is currently calculated on length of service, with a month’s pay for every year worked, meaning those with the longest service will be most affected.
As a precursor to the Budget Day protests, PCS have planned mass campaigning activities in several cities and towns on Friday 19 March to raise awareness and support for the planned action on the 24th.
In the meantime, 162 MPs have already signed an early day motion calling for a government re-think.
The PCS national executive is hoping that holding the protests on Budget Day will increase the pressure on the government to reach to a satisfactory agreement in preparation for massive job cuts expected after the general election.
