In a recent article released by the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7816450.stm), the run up to the 31 January deadline for self assessed tax returns, has seen the most “sophisticated and prolific” tax fraud scam in the UK to date. Having flooded the UK media, numerous reports affirm that fraudsters are allegedly targeting consumers under the false pretence of being HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officials and thereby requesting banking details of victims to supposedly pay them their tax refunds. Individuals who have revealed these details may face the devastating threat of their bank accounts being cleaned up.

The HMRC have expressed a specific concern regarding the fast growing e-mail scams that are set to target many thousands of potential victims.

1st Contact urges individuals to NOT reveal their banking details to anyone claiming to be HMRC officials as the HMRC only ever contact customers who are due a refund in writing by post. Emails and phone calls are therefore highly unusual and unheard of. We urge you to be aware of this issue and to pass this information on to your friends and family.
